About

Born in Germany and raised in the south of Spain, Teresa developed a love of singing and dancing from an early age, going on to study Flamenco at Amor de Dios in Madrid and undergraduate singing at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, London.

Much praised for her ‘beguiling, golden tone’, Teresa has a special affinity with Spanish repertoire both old and new and she is passionate about getting this music heard. She has performed twice at the Auditorio Manuel de Falla of Granada Spain, and in January 2018 she was invited to record songs by García Lorca and Ovalle at Abbey Road Studios.

On the operatic stage most recently Teresa made her debut as Musetta (La Bohème, Puccini) at the Mediterranean Opera Festival, Sicily. Further roles include Iphygénie (Iphygénie en Tauride, Gluck), Ariadne (Ariadne auf Naxos, Strauss), Le Prince Charmant (Cendrillon, Massenet), Leonore (Fidelio, Beethoven) and Fiordiligi (Cosi Fan Tutte, Mozart) among others. She has also appeared in bespoke performances as Carmen and Delilah, London (see below for clips).

For Handel’s Messiah with English Symphony Orchestra:
“Alto Teresa Karcher must also be praised, because of her excellent singing and, at times, for being so obviously possessed by the ‘duende’ of the words, music and occasion. “

“I didn’t get a chance to say on the night but just wanted to reach out and express how touched I was by your exquisite voice. What an amazing sound you make! It’s such a cliche but I felt like I wanted to just keep listening and listening, I didn’t want it to stop!”

Composer

Teresa has always endeavoured to find ways of combining her passion for music and making a difference.

At the age of 6 she penned a sequel to The Little Mermaid, taking the emphasis away from the then traditional ‘man saves woman’ narrative. At 12 she co-formed an Amnesty International club at school, debating prescient issues and writing to presidents around the world. As an adult she became the concert director for the semi-professional orchestra “Charities Philharmonia” and most recently co-founded the “Beethoven Orchestra for Humanity” – an orchestra after Beethoven that has been dubbed ‘a new orchestral experience for today’s world’.

At BOH guest speakers are invited to speak on an issue which is facing humanity i.e. climate change, gender inequality, the cost of war, to name but a few, and the music played relates to the issue at hand. Not only setting this music (however old or new) squarely in the context of our world today but giving the talk another dimension which goes beyond the realm of words.

Teresa’s love of opera extends to its languages and she has ensured fluency in French and Italian, in addition to her native German, Spanish and English.
